SAN ANTONIO – A pickup truck crashed into a Texas MedClinic Distribution Center on Tuesday on the city’s North Side.
According to the San Antonio Fire Department, the driver of the pickup suffered a medical episode before he hit a car and crashed into the building in the 10700 block of Gulfdale.
“He veered off the road, struck some other vehicles and then went into the building, that’s likely what happened,” said Joe Arrington, a public information officer for the San Antonio Fire Department.
“(Authorities) just told us that (the driver) may have had a seizure, and that two other vehicles had gotten hit,” said Meagan Ochoa, who works near the distribution center. “We smelt the smoke first. Then, we heard a loud bang and came out here, started walking faster and more people were exiting buildings.”
The crash sparked a fire that spread inside the entrance of the building, officials said.
The driver made it out of the pickup before firefighters arrived. He is conscious and stable and will be taken to Methodist Hospital for evaluation, officials said.
“We are very fortunate that (the driver) was unharmed in the fire and no one inside the structure was harmed as well,” Arrington said.
Employees at the distribution center were able to exit the building through a rear exit.
The building will likely remain closed due to smoke and damage.
