Man fatally stabbed outside Escondido home; homicide investigation underway
A 53-year-old Escondido man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a crash that killed a motorcyclist on state Route 79 in northern San Diego County, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The crash happened about 3:25 p.m. south of Aguanga Ranchos Road near the northern end of Palomar Mountain.
The CHP alleges Eric Cripe was headed north when his 2002 Toyota Tundra drifted off the east side of the highway. He then overcorrected, veering across the northbound and southbound lanes, into the path of a southbound 1991 Harley Davidson Sportster, CHP Officer Travis Garrow said.
The pickup and the bike collided, causing the 33-year-old rider from San Diego to be thrown off the motorcycle, Garrow said. The rider’s friends and good Samaritans stopped and rendered aid, but the man died at the scene.
His name was withheld pending notification of his family.
Cripe was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of murder and driving under the influence of alcohol, according to jail records. As of Monday afternoon, he remained held in jail on a no-bail status, with a Superior Court arraignment scheduled for Wednesday.
